Alappuzha beach is not so famouse as it is known as a backwater destination. But the west side of Alappuzha is the coast line of Arabian sea. Along the west side of the town, you pass through town's formerly affluent colonial-era suburbs. These suburbs gradually open out to the Alappuzha beach.
The wide gleaming white sands stretch out as far as eyes can see in both directions of the beach. The beach provides a welcome blast of fresh air. The beach is not suitable for swimming or sunbathing.
Alappuzha was once the busiest coast south of Mumbai. Its canals and backwaters helped in the passage of cargo. The lighthouse and the pier helped the boats ferry across, facilitating trade in their own way.
The 1,000 foot long pier was built in 1862 by Captain Hugh Crawford. Today it is a mere skeleton of its past. The bricks have mostly fallen apart or washed away by the sea. It is risky to walk on it.

Raheem Residency is the glossiest of Alappuzha's heritage hotels. It occupies a grand 140-year-old mansion on the beach front. The building is restored by its Indian-Irish owners. The hotel has half-a-dozen spacious, richly furnished a/c rooms.
For outside lounging space, you have a gorgeous swimming pool, hammocks on a roof terrace and a breezy open-sided restaurant.
Alleppey Beach Resorts
Hotel offers beach side rooms opening out to common verandas with great sea views. The rooms are huge and a bit overpriced. But many will consider the relaxing, breezy location worth the extra.
Casa Maria Beach Resort
Modern Kerala style building just back from the beach. Pleasant and comfortable location close to the beach and away from bustle of the town centre.
Pozhiyoram Beach Resort
The resort is 5 km north of Alappuzha town. It is only a ten minute drive up the coast road, but a world away from the racket of Alappuzha town.
The resort is on the edge of a small lagoon and white sand beach. Accommodation comprises four simple "beach view" rooms. All the rooms have sea-facing sit-outs right next to the sand.
More comfortable "Kerala Cottages" are there back in the palm grove. They have sporting gabled roofs and little verandas.
Traditional Kuttanad meals are served in a little restaurant overlooking the waterfront.
