Resorts in Periyar
Periyar is one of Kerala's most popular tourist destinations. The reserve's artificial lake was created in 1895 by British engineers in order to irrigate Madurai and Ramanathapuram districts and to provide water to the city of Madurai. The dam submerged forests but resulted in the Maharaja of Travancore protecting the richly vegetated hills adjoining the lake.
Some spice plantations near Periyar Tiger Reserve welcome visitors, and tourist offices, spice shops and some hotel run guided tours to the cardamom, rubber and coffee plantations of Murikkady, the pepper plantations at Vandiperiyar and the cardamom centre at Vandanmedu. Peermedu on the road from Kottayam to Kumily leading to Periyar Tiger Reserve has a number of picturesquely located tea, rubber and cardamom plantations.
Most hotels and resorts at Thekkkady, Kumily, Vandenmedu and Peermedu can arrange visits to plantations.

It is a good idea to make reservations (at any KTDC office), particularly for weekends. Note that there is effectively a curfew at these places-guests are not permitted to roam the after 6pm.
