Palakkad Hotels

Palakkad's small but adequate crop of hotels is pitched primarily at business clients passing through. Further afield, a handful of more upscale, foreigner-oriented heritage homestays and ayurveda spas are desirable destinations in their own right, with lots of traditional Kerala character and potential for trips into the less-frequented rural corners of the state.

Palakkad Hotels

Fort Palace Fort Palace
Fort Palace

1km from bus stand on West Fort Rd
Tel: 0491 2534621

Opposite the fort, this efficient mid-range hotel, built in mock-citadel style complete with crenellations, offers a choice of polished, very good-value a/c and non-a/c rooms, all en suite. Brace yourself for a worthy vibe on Saturday nights, when the bar downstairs hosts noisy, male-dominated discos.

English Church Rd
Tel: 0491 2525262

Well managed though rather dowdy, place that's the best fallback if you can't get a room at the Fort Palace, with spacious, centrally a/c rooms. Its greatest asset is the excellent 24hr vegetarian coffee shop next to the main entrance built in traditional Kerala style.

Kalari Kovilakam

20km south Palakkad

It is impossible to imagine a more exquisite place to receive ayurvedic treatments than Kalari Kovilakam. The eco-conscious CGH chain spent three years renovating this eighteenth-century palace, former residence of the Vengunad dynasty, and the result is as spectacular as the mountain backdrop.

Kalari Kovilakom Kalari Kovilakom

Guests are encouraged not to leave the premises during their stay, which is no great chore as the whole place, set in substantial grounds, is an architectural feast: colonnaded walkways lead to open nalukettu courtyards, hidden bathing pools and wood lined interiors, lit by louvered windows and slated screens.

The food served in the strictly vegetarian restaurant is tailored to fit individual treatment regimes; alcohol and tobacco are forbidden.

ITL Residency

Press Club Rd
Tel: 0491 2525252

Well-scrubbed, functional lower-mid-range option in a quiet location overlooking a leafy disused railway line. The white-painted rooms are fresh and clean, and bathrooms immaculate.

Kandath Tharavad Kandath Tharavad
Kandath Tharavad

Tel: 04922 284124

Idyllic heritage homestay, in a 200-year-old ancestral seat set on the edge of a sleepy village 10km south of Palakkad. Surrounded by rice paddy, the mansion's most striking feature is the raised, colonnaded purathalam veranda at the front, whose pillars are capped by carvings of elephants, snakes and dragons.

Host Mr Bhagawaldas and his offspring, of fifth and sixth generations to live here, offer sic simple furnished guest rooms, and activities ranging from guided birding and trekking to bullock-cart and cycles rides, cookery classes and even toddy tapping trips.

KPM Regency

Press Club Rd
Tel: 0491 2534601

Serviceable three-star in the town centre with pleasant a/c rooms, along with cheaper and far less appealing "executive" options on the lower ground floor, which are little bigger than the beds within them.

Anuragam Farm
Tel: 04923 275682

A wild-card option, for spiritually inclined budget travellers with a sense of adventure. Nestled at the foot of the mighty Nelliyampathy escarpment, basic accommodation is offered on a working organic farm in a truly bucolic, timeless setting. Guests are encouraged to pitch in with simple farm work and host Suman can point you in the direction of spectacular local treks.

There are a few guesthouses and plantation stays in the area, but the only one worth considering is the excellent-value Ciscilia Heritage, on the Ranimedu Estate, 6km form Kaikatty Tel: 04923 206283

As a fall back you could always try the government-run ITL Resort down in Kaikatty. Tel: 04923 246357
